More Than a Meal: The Story Behind Food Truck Friday

Some of the best traditions begin during the hardest times.

When the world slowed down during the COVID-19 pandemic, communities everywhere were looking for ways to stay connected while supporting the local businesses and organizations that make small towns special. Like many others, we asked ourselves a simple question:

How can we help?

The answer wasn't found in a boardroom or a marketing plan. It was found in our parking lots, our local food trucks, and the people who call our communities home.

That's how Food Truck Friday began in the Sauk Centre, Long Prairie, and Pelican Rapids communities.

A Simple Idea with a Bigger Purpose

At first glance, Food Truck Friday may look like a lunch event. People gather outside, enjoy great food, catch up with neighbors, and soak up a little Minnesota sunshine.

But behind every meal is a much bigger story.
 
Each Food Truck Friday is designed to support the small businesses that serve our communities every day.
 
Local food vendors have the opportunity to introduce themselves to new customers, build relationships, and grow their businesses one meal at a time.
 
At the same time, we partner with local nonprofit organizations and community causes by matching food truck sales up to $500, a donation that goes directly back to the featured organization.
 
One lunch can help support a youth sports team, a senior center, a scouting organization, or another local group making a difference.
 
That's the kind of impact that happens when a community comes together.

Community Is Stronger When We Show Up

One of the greatest things about living in a small town is knowing the people behind the businesses.

The person serving your lunch might also coach your child's baseball team.
 
The volunteers collecting donations might be your neighbors.
 
The organization benefiting from the event could be helping families just a few blocks away.
 
Food Truck Friday reminds us that supporting local doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it's as simple as choosing lunch from a local vendor, sharing a picnic table with friends, or stopping by to say hello.
 
Those small decisions have a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community.
